The Lamorinda United U14 Girls finished with the second highest point total out of the 10 teams in the Platinum Division of The Northern California Spring Showcase tournament. It was the Lamorinda defense that set the tone in the first match against American River and throughout The United’s undefeated run through the weekend. An impenetrable back wall led by Maggie Maguire, Morgan Rogers and Brianna Donat kept American River back on their heels, unfortunately The United were also unable to score and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The Saturday afternoon match, against arch rival Walnut Creek Explosion, proved to be more interesting. The Explosion struck first before Emma Nushi found the back of the net with the first of her two tournament goals off assists from Jessie Carlin who had been making nice passes all match long, and Greta Kohls who played well at forward during the weekend. Walnut Creek broke the tie late in the second half to take 2 to 1 lead and things looked desperate. On the very last possession of the game Lindsay Easter hit a beautiful header from midfield into The United attacking zone. Following a pretty touch by Caroline Clark and short pass from Hannah Fishlow, Jadey Sadoff launched a ball into the corner of the goal to give Lamorinda a thrilling last second tie. On Sunday, against The West Coast Wonder, The United fought to a 1 to 1 halftime tie before Tova Ricardo, on the first of her two tournament goals, scored on a breakaway off a steal by Katie Tuemmler and a nice pass from Olivia Fishlow to take the lead. A late fluke goal by the Wonder tied the game and kept Lamorinda from playing for first place; instead they headed to the Consolation Game against the Sacramento Extreme. The game was deadlocked at 1 to 1 midway through the second half, when Katharine Larson hit Cecilia Gee who launched a 20 yard shot into the back of the net. From there it was a desperate Sacramento team that launched shot after shot but were not able to get one by Adriana Uyehara who played brilliantly all tournament in goal, and was able to preserve the 2-1 victory, thereby allowing the United to edge by Walnut Creek in tournament points and capture a well-deserved second place medal.

U14 Girls Take Second-Place in Stanford Tournament

U14 Girls Take Second-Place in Stanford Tournament
U14 Girls Take Second-Place in Stanford Tournament

The Lamorinda United U14 Girl’s continue to coalesce as a team and The Stanford Summer Classic Tournament results are further evidence of this process.  On Saturday, August 18th they had easily their best day as a team as they played near perfect soccer in two impressive victories.  On a warm sunny morning in Palo Alto The San Luis Obispo Storm struck first to take a 1 to 0 lead on a fluke goal early in the first half.  But this was a mistake as it awoke the sleeping United giant.  The U14s came back quickly with a goal of their own on a blast out of midfield.  Almost immediately thereafter another score was added on a breakaway and The U14’s were up 2 to 1 at halftime.  The second half was all United as they controlled the game, scored two more goals, and finished with a 4 to 1 victory over SLO.  Later that evening the roll continued.  Lamorinda took the field against a talented Sunnyvale Alliance Devils squad and continued where they left off.  The United struck like lightning with a relentless assault on Sunnyvale’s goalkeeper and scored two quick goals before the Devils cut the lead to 2 to 1 at halftime.  In the second half the U14s played the best soccer of their young lives and thoroughly dominated Sunnyvale, possessing the ball throughout, scoring three goals, and completing a 5 to 1 dismantling of the eventual third-place Devils.

Day two was more difficult as the hometown Mountain View/Los Altos Typhoon gave Lamorinda all they could handle in 2-2 tie.  The United started the game without missing a beat and scored two first half goals to take a commanding 2 to nil lead at the half.  But the Typhoon, feeding off a large partisan crowd, came back against a tired United squad to get two late goals and add some drama to the United chances for advancing to the Finals.  Fortunately, due to the dominance of Day 1, the U14s advanced into the Finals that evening.  The Finals proved to be a clash of titans, as the Top 10 ranked Ajax East Bay squad faced off against the red hot Lamorinda team in a heavyweight tilt.  The first half was taught and tense and was scoreless until the very end, when Ajax was able to score on a set piece play off a corner kick.  The second half was also played tensely, but The Ajax were able to get a late goal on a controversial throw in play.  Undaunted, Lamorinda struck back immediately with a scrappy, hustle goal, on a breakaway.  Within minutes The United had a chance to tie, with Ajax on their heels and their keeper out of position, but the Lamorinda shot just missed off the top of the crossbar and Ajax squeaked by with a 2 to 1 victory.  While just missing on their bid for first place, U14s were satisfied with their level of play that will hopefully be a foreshadowing of things to come as they look towards Fall league which commences in September.

Lamorinda United 94 Makes It a Hat Trick
By  John Fuller
Soccer legend Johan Cruijff has a famous saying, “Football is simple but the hardest thing to do is playing simple football.”  It is a quote that has become a core value and statement of how the Lamorinda United 94 team plays the game of soccer.  The U18 LMSC team focuses on passing the ball quickly, accurately, and effectively.  The ball moves fluidly around the field.  Lamo players anticipate and are aware of the defending players and yet continue to build a progression from the back line and leading toward the opponent's goal. Lamorinda United consistently demonstrates an ability to play “collective” soccer.  By this, there is a sense that every member of the team knows their role, plays their position with passion and intelligence, and understands the value of teamwork.  This unique combination has been a recipe for success.
Results are the fruits of this total team concept.  Lamorinda United 94 has been on a very nice run in 2012 claiming the championship in the past three tournaments: Regional Academy League Playoffs, US Club Regionals, and the Davis Legacy College Showcase.  The tournaments and time of year may change, but the dedication and execution of a game plan remains the same.  United keeps possession of the ball, passes consistently to feet, and manages the game to their advantage.  On Monday, July 16th Lamorinda United 94 regained the #1 ranking once again in Northern California according to gotsoccer.com.  In addition to the team accolades, over a dozen players have been recruited and made verbal agreements to continue onward with soccer at various colleges and universities around the country.  Teamwork, friendship, and dedication are the cornerstones of a club that has been a joy to witness.

LAMORINDA UNITED 97 GIRLS TAKE SECOND AT DAVIS LEGACY COLLEGE SHOWCASE

LAMORINDA UNITED 97 GIRLS TAKE SECOND AT DAVIS LEGACY COLLEGE SHOWCASE
LAMORINDA UNITED 97 GIRLS TAKE SECOND AT DAVIS LEGACY COLLEGE SHOWCASE

The summer soccer tournament season is well underway and Lamorinda United 97 is making their mark! They played five games over a three day weekend at the Davis Legacy College Showcase. Lamorinda won their first two preliminary games with a total of 9 goals while giving up 4 against Sonoma County Alliance and Elk Grove. In the third preliminary game, Lamorinda faced a tough battle against Santa Rosa Fury, which ended with a 1-1 tie. No matter, this tie cinched the top spot for Lamorinda in the semi-final game against American River Freedom who was the second place finisher in the competing bracket with 5 goals for and 8 goals against.

With their strong passing game, Lamorinda was able to move the ball around effectively and efficiently, tiring out their opponents. They won the semi-final match with a 3-0 shut out, and moved onto the final championship match against the California Cougars.

As the weather got hotter in Davis for the final game, so did the game of play. The California Cougars came out with a roar and scored 3 goals before half time. Unfortunately, Lamorinda's valiant efforts were not enough to come back from the deficit. The final game ended in a shut out, 3-0, in favor of the Cal Cougars. With heads held high and in good spirit, the girls went on stage and happily accepted their gifts from the sponsors!

Congratulations to the Lamorinda United 97 girls and Coach Hakim in their first outing at a college showcase tournament! Next up – the Pleasanton RAGE College Showcase! Good luck and have fun girls!

U14 Girls Advance to Semi-finals in Davis Tourney

U14 Girls Advance to Semi-finals in Davis Tourney
U14 Girls Advance to Semi-finals in Davis Tourney

After a difficult Spring Season, the Lamorinda United U14 Girl’s are pulling together as a team and the result is apparent on the field.  The squad is playing much better of late, and this resulted in a strong showing recently in The Davis Legacy Showcase Tournament as they advanced to the semifinals on the strength of two shutout victories.  Action started early on a beautiful, clear and cool Friday morning in The Central Valley.  Despite the early hour, Lamorinda came out awake and played stifling defense to maintain a 0-0 tie at halftime versus El Dorado.  Early in the second half, the U14s came through with a goal and made it last, with defense and sparkling goalkeeping, to gain the 1-0 win.  Later on Friday, as the temperature heated up, so did Lamorinda.  Firing on all cylinders, the team took a 2 to 0 lead in the first half and once again used excellent defense, and outstanding work in the nets, to preserve the shutout win over the Cal Blues Shock; securing a visit to the semis on Saturday.  While the team didn’t fair quite as well on Saturday, they did play well in a 2-1 loss against Ajax Elite before running out of gas in the second half of their loss to Davis in the semis.  They narrowly missed scoring twice in the first half of a scoreless tie, before the Davis team was able to scratch out a few goals to put it away late in the game.
